Performance

Whether your priority is performance, handling or fuel economy, you are in luck with either the Accent or Elantra. The Accent I-4 has a 1.6-liter engine that earns 28 mpg city and 38 mpg highway. Elantra sedans have an available Eco engine that gets virtually the same gas mileage. It even claims one extra mpg in city driving. Both have front wheel drive and a choice of manual or automatic transmissions. Accent drivers command 130 horsepower and 119 lb-ft of torque. Elantra drivers enjoy a bit more with 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque. If you really love to drive, check out the Elantra GT or GT Sport. These engine models kick out either 161 horsepower or 201 horsepower.

Appearance

If you want something colorful and sporty, the Accent is definitely a good choice. Bigger, the Elantra can claim more space, and it is offered in a convenient hatchback. Either way, you’ll appreciate the car’s good looks and aerodynamic styling. The Accent wheelbase is 101 inches vs 106 inches for the Elantra. Inside that translates to 90 cu.ft. in the Accent passenger cabin and 95 cu.ft. in the Elantra cabin. This means that the Elantra has more rear legroom and more shoulder and hip room. Headroom is similar in the two cars. When it comes to hauling your stuff, the Accent trunk is 13.7 cubic feet, which is ample for its size.

The Elantra trunk is 14.4 cubes. Although the Elantra overall quality is a step above the Accent, the interior features list is very similar. With either car, SE models have a touchscreen, a rearview camera, Bluetooth and a USB port. Both SEL models have a seven-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Accent Limited models wear a premium cloth, and Elantra Limited models dress up in leather. While both have heated front seats and other amenities, the Elantra offers its Limited Ultimate edition with heated rear seats, an Infinity sound system, navigation, a sunroof, and much more. If you choose the Proximity Key with either car, you can get a hands-free auto-open trunk function.
