Exterior and Performance

The biggest news for 2018 is the introduction of an eight-speed automatic transmission for the Sport 2.0T and Limited 2.0T models. It adds precision for these turbos which produce 245 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. The standard turbo generates significant horsepower and 195 lb.-ft. of torque. It is paired with a six-speed automatic. The Eco edition has a different turbo and pairs it with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Engineers tweaked the steering and suspension for greater responsiveness. Owners can expect good gas mileage, especially on the Eco which earns 36 mpg highway. You can also get a hybrid edition and reduce the time you spend pumping gas. New Sonata owners enjoy peace of mind in the form of the longest powertrain warranty available from any automaker. Hyundai covers the Sonata engine for 10 years or 100,000 miles.

Interior and Technology

The interior has been upgraded with special features including a three-spoke steering wheel. The knobs and controls have a higher quality feel, but the intuitive layout remains the same. This puts important features in easy reach of the driver. The cabin is large, measuring 106 cubic feet in passenger space. The trunk is a good size for families, offering 16 cubic feet for luggage. A new trim, the 2018 Hyundai Sonata SEL, is slotted third amidst the original trims, SE, Eco, Sport, Limited, Sport 2.0T, and Limited 2.0Y. The SEL trim adds many of the goodies that shoppers want. Push button start comes with a proximity key. A power driver’s seat is complemented by power-heat for both front positions. The rear passengers get a dedicated USB port for their use. It also allows you to select packages previously reserved for higher trims. Sport editions add sporty interior elements and a power sunroof. Limited editions come with premium leather upholstery and ventilated front seats.

Even on the base SE edition, the new dash entertainment standard is a seven-inch touchscreen with a rearview camera. Adding value, it has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Limited 2.0T editions get the available eight-inch navigation system. The automaker has expanded its Blue Link system, allowing it to pair with Amazon Echo. This gives owners remote access to their vehicle. A wireless charging pad and more USB ports have been added to the menu.

2018 Hyundai Sonata Interior

For the first time, every Sonata will have a blind spot monitor. This system watches for side traffic and signals the driver when it isn’t safe to change lanes. Also standard for the first time, a rear cross-traffic alert helps improve the safety of reverse maneuvers. Sonatas earned five stars when tested by the NHTSA. The car also scored high enough to earn an IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus. The crash avoidance systems, now offered on more trims, include a forward collision warning and a related emergency automatic braking system. Shoppers will also be pleased that a lane departure system has been added to the safety roster. Limited editions have standard Dynamic Bending Lights. This clever feature reveals more of the car's actual trajectory. Smart Cruise Control regulates the Sonata's speed to match conditions, making cruise control more useful in busier traffic.
