2018 Hyundai Elantra

Serving Watertown, CT, Waterbury, and Bristol

Still early into its sixth generation of production, the Hyundai Elantra receives comparatively few changes for the 2018 model year. Hyundai has shuffled a few features between trims, which consist of the SE, SEL, Value Edition, Eco, Sport, and Limited. For a compact car, the 2018 Elantra still has lots to offer, even amid a crowded and highly competitive segment. Its main attributes—terrific fuel efficiency, loads of available features, and remarkable cargo space—remain intact.

Exterior and Performance

As the most fuel efficiency-minded available trim, the Eco version of the 2018 Hyundai Elantra is the only one with a 1.4-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder (I4) engine, which provides 128 horsepower and 156 lb-ft of torque. It is considerably smaller than the 1.6-liter turbocharged I4 (201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque) that is exclusive to the Sport trim, as well as the 2.0-liter I4 (147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque) on the rest of the models. Also, the Eco is the only trim that has its engine tied to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission, which is also primed for maxing out the nameplate’s fuel economy. A 6-speed manual is given to the base-level SE and the aptly-named Sport, while the other four trims get a 6-speed automatic gearbox. Both the 7-speed and 6-speed auto include a SHIFTRONIC gear shifter to simulate how the 6-speed manual operates.

Interior and Technology

Classified as a compact car, the 2018 Hyundai Elantra provides seating for five, with 95.8 cubic feet of passenger volume. You’d need to upgrade to at least the Value Edition to get heating capability on the front seats, and at least the Sport to get leather trim. The top-level Limited stands apart with its power-adjustable driver’s seat (complete with power lumbar support), while sport-style front seats with red contrast stitching is exclusive to the Sport.

For comfort and convenience, the 2018 Hyundai Elantra starts off with Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free phone operation and streaming audio, as well as six-speaker audio for entertainment. Upgrading to the SEL adds a three-month trial subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio, a 7-inch high-resolution touchscreen for displaying audio information, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for executing infotainment functions with your smartphone, and a 3.5-inch TFT monochromatic cluster display for vital vehicle information. Going with at least the Value Edition increases your chances of getting enhancements or additions like a power tilt-and-slide sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity key entry with push-button engine start, auto-dimming rearview mirror, garage-door opener, and dual charging USB ports. Only the Limited trim gets the Blue Link Connected Care and Remote Package for a suite of car care and remote-access services and functions.

2018 Hyundai Elantra Interior

For preventing injury when involved in a crash, the 2018 Hyundai Elantra is equipped with a driver’s knee airbag, dual front impact airbags, dual front seat-mounted side impact airbags, and roof-mounted side curtain airbags for the front and rear rows. Also standard are driver’s blind spot mirror, an electronic vehicle stability control system with traction control, anti-lock braking with brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution, and a security system that combines remote keyless entry and a panic alarm. Upgrading beyond the SE beefs up the driver’s blind spot mirror with a blind spot detection system with rear cross-traffic alert and lane change assist, as well as a rearview camera with dynamic guidelines.

Four-wheel disc brakes (instead of front-disc and rear-drum ones) are present on all trims save for the SE and Eco; the Sport has larger discs for even more enhanced stopping ability.
